RN to BSN

• The Institute of Medicine’s 2010 Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report, developed four key messages to help ensure that the nursing profession meet the rapidly transforming needs of the healthcare system. One key message was that “Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression” (IOM, 2011).
• Another motivator for nurses and the healthcare system is the mounting research-based evidence that patient outcomes are better when care is provided by RNs with a BSN degree.
• Based on this evidence, many hospitals and other employers are requiring many of their associate degree and diploma nurses to go back to school or face losing their jobs.
• Most nurses must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to work in management roles
• Magnet hospitals (awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This coveted honor helps hospitals attract patients, nurses, and other medical staff) require 80% of nurses to have a bachelor’s degree and 100% of managers to have a bachelor’s degree.
• The BSN prepared nurse is likely to have additional job duties and achieve a salary increase. Right now, the ADN or diploma, nurse is likely earning an average of $60,440 a year. However, once they complete a RN to BSN program, their salary could increase by an average of $5,340 annually, bringing it to $65,780.
• The RN to BSN degree is a post-licensure program designed for registered nurses who have earned either a diploma or an associate degree in nursing and desire to advance their personal and professional goals.
