Webber International University Honors First Alumnus and New London (first female) Police Chief
In honor of her assuming the rank and station of Chief of Police of New London, Connecticut, Webber International University has proclaimed July 17th, 2009 Chief Margaret Ackley Day. Ackley earned her associate’s degree from Webber in 1982.
“We have a number of graduates in law enforcement,” said University President Dr. H. Keith Wade. “Many have risen through the ranks. Understanding that just because you wear a pistol to work most assuredly does not mean that you’re not actively involved in strategic management, we actually implemented bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Security Management a few years ago, so we expect to see more of our graduates in senior positions in law enforcement. But, to the best of our knowledge, this is our very first Police Chief. We are exceptionally thankful that there exist in this world men and women who rise to the challenges inherent in law enforcement. It’s quite often a dirty, thankless job which does not pay nearly enough considering the risks these last defenders of decent society take every day of their working lives. We just cannot say enough good things about those who are willing to serve society so selflessly by devoting themselves to law enforcement. We are extraordinarily proud that one of our own has risen to rank of Chief.”
“While we were not the last stop in her educational career, we think Webber ended up being a good choice for Chief Ackley,” said Wade. “Though she actually majored in Lodging and Restaurant Management, Webber has always had a common business core of courses which assured that even if one changed careers, he or she could rely upon a good solid foundation of business knowledge. The Day quotes Ackely as saying that she went into law enforcement because ‘she was looking for a career where women would be paid the same as men’. Webber was founded in 1927 specifically to provide women avenues into the worlds of leadership and management. While we began admitting males in the 1970’s, by then we had fifty years of alumni success stories supporting what our founders knew back in the 1800’s: when it comes to being a good leader, gender just does not enter into the equation. We’re very proud of her and are certain she’ll be a great Chief.”
